Freshly renovated, the impressive castle radiates the venerable splendour of bygone days. The great hall, a vaulted cellar, seminar rooms, the castle courtyard, a tower room, the castle chapel, a medieval skittle alley that is a protected historic feature and even its own registry office…the castle offers abundant space and rooms for every occasion amidst a one-of-a-kind ambiance.

The Sauerburg has modern single and double rooms, a wonderfully appointed wedding suite as well as holiday apartments. All of the rooms are comfortably furnished, including amenities such as ISDN, LAN connection and TV.

The quiet location and generous dimensions of the castle complex with 3 seminar rooms plus a small conference room offer ideal conditions for activities ranging from exclusive social functions to larger business events and seminars.

To the present day, every part of the castle is used for events such as wedding receptions, medieval markets, classic car rallies, hot-air balloon launches and various exhibitions.

THE HISTORY:

The first documentary evidence of the village surrounding the Sauerburg castle dates back to the year 1120. The “Subburne” castle was erected in the years from 1355 to 1361 at the behest of Count Ruprecht with the permission of Archbishop Gerlach of Mainz. In the 14th century, castles were often built as administrative centres in the vicinity of a customs station and for the purpose of hunting. It was also intended to serve as protection against the castle Burg Waldeck, which was located in close proximity and of which only some vestiges of walls still remain. In 2004 the castle was completely renovated in the space of only one year: now it is a real gem and a landmark dominating the Sauerthal valley.
